The nevera dels regatxols

The natural cold, in form of snow or ice, was used during centuries for medical and culinary purposes and to keep food too. The Nevera dels Regatxols, built in the 17th century is a magnificent example of the snow maintenance.

It's in Ares del Maestrat Restored in 2005, it became an interpretation centre: an exhibition and an audiovisual presentation explain the ancient ice trade which was developed in the Valencian Community from the 16th century and that reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries, coinciding with a climatic period that favoured the frequent snowfalls in winter in levels close to 1,000 metres.

In the visit an amazing well, which is 8 metres deep and is covered by a shed made of stone can be observed. Here, a scene in which a nevater is storing snow was recreated.
